As we enter a new year, oftentimes we make resolutions about what we want to accomplish in the upcoming year. We want to lose weight, get a promotion, get married, and so on. All this is well and good to a point, but I think in the middle of all of our resolutions, we lose sight of the two most important questions.
First, what is God’s dream? Does He dream about us getting that new house or new car? While he does want us living in abundance, I don’t believe that those things are what are most important to Him. Simply put, God’s dream is that many, many, many souls discover that He loves them and wants a relationship with Him. Many people on this planet don’t even know His name and many more have misconceptions about who He is. I believe God’s dream is that the people He has charged with the task of declaring His glory to the nations would actually care more about those people than they do about material possessions or social status.
That leads to the second most important question: “What does God want me to do this year to bring Him the most glory and draw the maximum amount of people into His kingdom?” Note the question is not focused on my life, my needs, my wishes. It is focused on Him. Time is too short to be distracted by self. We are not our own, we are bought with a price.
So this year, don’t focus on entertaining yourself or even making your family happy (although a strong family is important). What matters most is that you take the time to listen to what God is telling you to do it and do it with all your heart. Take it one step at a time. Tell a neighbor about Jesus. Sponsor a missionary hard at work in Africa reaching an unreached tribe. Put aside petty theological differences for the sake of uniting to reach your city. Strengthen the widow, defend the orphan, feed the hungry, comfort the brokenhearted. Be strong and courageous. Have no regrets.
If every Christian everywhere would be simply willing to pray (and mean it) “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” and then live it out, untold millions could come to know Christ this year. And that is God’s dream.
